Death Review in CS2: A Checklist for Your Own Replays

Most deaths in MM repeat: same spot, same mistake, same 'no idea where that came from'. Death review is 10 minutes instead of an hour of demos: 2-3 deaths from your last session in the 2D replay. The takeaway is one rule for tomorrow, not ten. Positioning and decision-making don't get fixed by aim — review is what trains them.

What this drill is

A review of 2-3 of your own deaths from last session. Two tools for different questions: Leetify's 2D replay for the macro (positions, timings, rotations), the full in-game demo with X-ray for the micro (crosshair, strafes, duels). For each death you rewind 10-15 seconds back and look for the cause. Trains positioning and decision-making — the things aim won't fix.

How to train it

Two ways to watch — and they are two different reviews: — Leetify 2D replay (macro): leetify.com → Matches → match → Rounds tab. Top-down view of all ten players. It shows positions, peek timings, rotations, crossfires — but NOT your crosshair or strafes. — Full in-game demo (micro): MM/Premier — Watch menu → Your Matches → download. FACEIT — download the demo from the match page, unpack the archive into the game/csgo folder (file name without spaces or non-Latin characters), then playdemo file_name in the console. Turn on X-ray (X key) — you see enemies through walls. It shows what the 2D replay can't: crosshair placement, strafes, the duel itself in first person and how your grenades actually work.

Routine (10 min): 1. Take a match where YOU played poorly — mistakes are easiest to spot there. Skip blowout losses: when the whole team gets rolled, there's not much in it for you personally. Pick 2-3 deaths: prioritize early-round deaths and the ones you never saw coming. 2. Macro pass in 2D: for each death rewind 10-15s BEFORE you die, zoom the camera out and watch the whole picture. — Timing: when did the enemy push and why did they get there before you? Did you peek earlier or later than you should have? — Position: where were you standing and why there? Did you have a way out? Were you in a crossfire with a teammate, was anyone close enough to trade you? — Utility: did you have a grenade in your pocket, and why didn't it fly (flash for the peek, smoke to fall back)? 3. Micro follow-up in the full demo — for deaths the 2D pass didn't explain ("the position looked fine, yet I died"): — Crosshair: where were you aiming at the moment of contact — head level at the corner, or the floor? — The duel: how did the enemy move and shoot, what exactly won them the fight? You might steal a trick. — Grenades: does your flash actually blind anyone — or is that $200 thrown away every round? 4. Takeaway + fix: write down ONE rule for tomorrow ("don't re-peek without a flash", "fall back after the first frag on B"). If the mistake is crosshair placement on a specific spot: load an empty map, put a bot on that position and drill the peek — 5 minutes is enough.

Common mistakes: rewatching your highlights instead of your deaths; watching the whole match end to end (loses focus); a takeaway like "shoot better" (shooting is trained by other drills — here you find the cause of a specific death).

Metric: a written takeaway per session. The payoff — week over week, fewer deaths following the same script.

Access: the Leetify 2D replay is a Pro feature. Leetify hands out a free day of Pro two ways: the Leetify clan tag in your nickname earns a day of Pro for every day you play an MR15 competitive match with it; or get a knife kill and type "Get Leetify" in chat right after. Without Pro, review the full demo from your match history — it has X-ray and a free camera.

Practicing on your own server

Some drills are easier to run on your own server with cheat commands — grab the CS2 practice config with infinite ammo and grenade trajectories. No server of your own? See where to train in CS2: deathmatch and retake servers plus workshop maps.
